Coronavirus, a virus that has "literally only existed on planet Earth in humans for maybe two months,"-Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, is escalating quick. Thousands of people in china have been diagnosed in the past few days, and Americans are being brought from Wuhan, the Province where this virus all began, to a military base. While this is meant to help their sickness, this very well could be creating a more serious risk, and although being quarantined is crucial to prevent the virus, being put with 200 other Americans, could cause the disease to spread, and could allow a larger risk. China may be doing joint quarantines, but in the U.S self-quarantine is being relied on. There are too many Americans returning from China to have that responsibility. On Monday, the U.S had only 11 confirmed cases. Although compared to China this amount seems miner, getting rid of the virus is no easy task. "I am going stir crazy," says Claire Campbell, a college student recently diagnosed with the disease. The extent that the U.S is going, to prevent any non-Americans from entering the country if they have been in China is excruciating. For example, a Canadian attempting to enter the U.S by foot was recently sent out of the country due to his travel to China in nearby weeks. Additionally, the Federal Government has recently directed air carriers to prevent anyone who has traveled to China in recent weeks from boarding any American flights. As Coronavirus is becoming more serious, and a bugger risk, there is a major controversy, debating how to deal with the virus, and how to go about getting rid of it. Answer the following questions:
Do you think people should be quarantined all together, or separate?
Why do you think the U.S is going to more extreme measures than China, or other countries?
What do you think should happen next? What should be done to fully prevent the virus?
Have you ever gone to school sick and regretted it?

For people exposed to a contagious disease, they should be quarantined separately. Quarantine is the isolation of people exposed to a virus, and they limit their movement so that in case they become sick, they won’t be infecting others with a disease as contagious as the coronavirus people have even quarantined themselves. The people who separated themselves from other people, “were counting down the days since they left China, waiting anxiously to see if symptoms develop” (Smith). If one person in a group quarantine became sick, then he/she would infect everyone else. Fewer people will catch the disease if held separately.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S is going to more extreme measures as they don’t want the coronavirus to spread to our country. A person can have the coronavirus for up to two weeks before they start experiencing symptoms, so the U.S is persistent not to let, and people from china travel outward. Also, China doesn’t want to feel weak about having this disease throughout their country, so they choose to hinder it. At some point, China will have to take serious action, as the coronavirus could get worse.
For the future to come, the world should work on a cure. The people of China should not be able to travel, especially in the area of Wuhan. The movement of people in China should be limited until there is a cure. Stopping the coronavirus from spreading should be a main priority.
I usually don’t go to school when I am sick, but things at school have infected me. I believe it is essential for people to stay home when they’re sick, so they don’t affect others. I people never stayed home when they are sick, they wouldn’t get better and increase the chance of their sickness spreading to multiple people.
I think people should be quarantined separately. Like Rhys said, the reason people with coronavirus are kept away from the rest of the world is so that no one else gets infected. Not only would this lower the chances of this becoming more chaotic than it already is, but it would also make it a lot easier to treat the people who already have it.
ReplyDeleteI think the U.S is going to more extreme measures because they don't want it to spread to the people in our country and for us to be in the position China is in. They don't want it to get bigger than it already is and since the U.S is one of the more diverse if not the most diverse country in the world, it is more likely for people who come in from other places to carry the virus.
I think all countries should work together to get rid of this virus instead of just completely avoiding where it is growing and coming from. Right now, no one is allowed in to the U.S who have been in contact with anyone from China and we are trying to avoid any connections to them. Instead, what should be happening is all the countries in the world should be helping China figure this out. They should stay in their country where they would feel safe but people should be trying to find a way to help stop it instead of just trying to keep it out of their country.
I don't go to school when I'm sick and like Rhys, things from school have infected me. If people were to stay home and away from others while they were sick it would get rid of whatever they have a lot quicker. If they go to school more people would get it, making it take longer for it to not be a problem.
Like Rhys and Julio, I believe that people should be quarantined separately. If there was a group quarantine, one person who contracted the virus could infect the whole entire group. This would mean that everyone involved in the quarantine would face the symptoms of the Corona Virus. By holding the quarantines separately, fewer people will subject to the Virus. One drawback of holding them separately is that the people involved may get lonely, as they don’t have any other people to engage in conversation with. However, in the long run it is better to make sure that fewer people end up with the disease.
ReplyDeleteThe United States is going to these measures in order to prevent the Corona Virus from spreading inside of our country. They have seen how quickly it spread throughout mainland China, and they realize that the same thing could easily happen here in the US. Also, many people travel through the United States, therefore increasing the chance of the disease spreading throughout the country. That is why the US closed off any flights going in or out of China, and are quarantining anybody who has any relation to the coronavirus.
I believe that scientists should keep working on finding a vaccine for the virus, as that is the only way to truly stop it. Even if we cut off all ties to China and quarantine a ton of people, the disease will still eventually make its way over to the US. Until a cure is found, there is no way to completely prevent people from contracting the Corona Virus.
I usually don’t go to school when I’m sick, but I’ve often become sick because of other people. There was a cold going around the school around two weeks ago, and I was one of the people who caught it. I think that people should stay home if there temperature is anywhere near a fever, as it is better to stay home and recover than go to school and delay your recovery.
I agree with Rhys that people who come into contact with the virus should be quarantined separately. Isolating the virus can be crucial to eliminating it so that it can't harm other people. Additionally, putting people who have been in contact with the virus together could cause the virus to spread, without allowing people the chance to recover.
ReplyDeleteThe US is going to more extreme measures than China or other countries to ensure the safety of its citizens. While there have been few cases of coronavirus in the US so far, the government does not want it to spread and infect more people. By preventing outbound travel from China the US hopes to prevent the spread of this virus.
To fully prevent this virus in the future a cure needs to be found or created. There is no way to fully eradicate the virus until there is a cure that is proven to be effective. Until a cure is found, travel to and from Wuhan should continue to be restricted. Preventing the spreading of the coronavirus needs to be an international priority.
I don't go to school if I am sick, however, I have gotten sick because of people at school. Because of this I think that it is important to stay home if you are sick, especially in the winter, when sickness spreads more quickly. It is also important to stay home from school if you are sick so that you have time to recover.
1. I agree with Rhys and the others that people should be quarantined separately. If they were quarantined together, then some of the sick individuals would infect the healthy ones. At that point, more people would become sick, which is the opposite of the objective of quarantining in the first place. I think that people should be put in isolated rooms so they don’t potentially spread the disease to anyone else, even if they are positive they are not sick and are only being quarantined due to being in Wuhan.
ReplyDelete2. The U.S. is taking extreme measures because they want to prevent the virus from reaching similar levels to what it has already reached in China. After all, while it may seem like there have been a relatively small amount of deaths, the death rate for coronavirus is much higher than that of the flu. It could end up killing many people all around the world if it successfully becomes a global pandemic. Also, the virus has a potentially long incubation period of up to two weeks. People traveling from Wuhan can therefore asymptomatically carry the virus, so extra precautions must be taken to quarantine all foreigners and Americans traveling from China.
3. Work has already begun on a vaccine, and while it may take a long time to develop it, it should still continue. I also think that China should continue doing its utmost in preventing the disease. As for other countries, they should probably institute even more intensive travel screening to ensure that less cases of the disease are transferred. Anyone arriving from China should be automatically quarantined, whether they are a citizen of the country or not. If the virus becomes even more infective, then healthy countries of the world may consider cutting off all commercial travel from China into their countries.
4. A few weeks ago on a Friday, I went to school sick with a cough and cold but without a fever. I didn’t feel well at all, but I decided to attend school because I wanted to receive a test grade and take a quiz. I was able to get through the day, but after school, I felt even worse and ended up being sick for the rest of the weekend. In retrospective, I likely would’ve recovered faster if I was able to rest on that Friday. More importantly, I wouldn’t have infected others, so I definitely regret it.
1. I believe that people who could potentially have the virus should be quarantined separately. The purpose of a quarantine is to prevent or contain the spread of a disease. If people were quarantined together, one person could develop the disease and spread it to everyone else. On the other hand if people were quarantined separately that one person who caught the disease would not spread it to everyone else, containing the disease. I agree with Gram that a downside to separately quarantining people is that they might become depressed from having nobody to talk to, but overall it is the better option because it prevents the disease from spreading.
ReplyDelete2. The US is going to more extreme measures than China and other countries because the US does not want the disease to spread around the country and become a huge problem like it is in China. The US realizes how catastrophic the disease can become and wants every citizen to be safe from the virus.
3. What should happen next is people that have the virus or could possibly have the virus should be quarantined and removed from others who do not carry the virus to prevent the virus from spreading. In addition people should not fly to or from China which will help contain the virus. Lastly scientists should work to find a cure to fully eradicate the disease.
4. I have gone to school with a minor cough and a sore throat, but I have not gone to school with a fever. I agree with Rhys that people should not go to school when they are sick, so others don’t get sick. If I went to school and made other people sick I would regret it.
I think that people should be quarantined separately. The disease can be different for everyone, ranging from very severe to only minor. Quarantining everyone together would only increase the severity of the sickness, and cause harm to those who are only minorly affected.
ReplyDeleteThe corona virus is a very serious and life threatening disease, that would wipe out dozens of people if it was released in the US. I think that the United States is going to extreme measures to get ahead of the sickness and prevent it from spreading more. Since China is already struggling, as most of the population has been diagnosed with the disease, there is little they can do to prevent it from spreading. However, since it has yet to spread and there are only a few cases in the US, there is more they can do to prevent it from getting worse.
I agree with Rhys, a cure is crucial, as this is the most effective way to prevent the virus from spreading. The quicker we formulate a cure the quicker we can move past and prevent deaths from occurring. China has already experienced multiple deaths and tragedies due to the virus, and the longer we wait without a cure the worse things will get.
Yes I have gone to school sick, but never with anything severe. One time I went to school with a cough and didn't feel well the whole day, however since I didn't want to get behind on work and tests I attended school. After school I didn't feel so well, and ended up staying home from school the next day. I agree with Shane, if I had taken the time to recover and get better it wouldn't have taken me so long to get rid of the sickness.
1. Like Graham and Rhys, I also agree that people should be quarantined separately for the sake of the people who is not yet infected. This however could be hard to maintain as military bases have limited space and can only contain so much people and giving each one an individual chunk could be difficult.
ReplyDelete2. The US is going to more extreme measures and they should be. After seeing how the virus spread uncontrollably through a province of China, they should be extremely concerned about containing the virus.
3. I feel like the next step should be installing more inspections on travelers and not shutting down all the flights to the US. By canceling the flights from China to the US, many American Citizens could be potentially trapped. Allowing flights from China to the US isn't a harmful action as long as people are being inspected carefully.
4. I have gone to school to school sick a few times and I definitely regretted it. Especially with the drainage of your enthusiasm during long block, I don't feel like I am able to absorb what the teachers are teaching me and the additional possibility of getting my friends sick is another reason why I don't go to school sick anymore.
1. I think that people should be quarantined separately. If groups of people are quarantined as a whole it would be much harder for people to get completely better because they might catch the disease again from someone else. While I understand how some people might think that a large quarantine area could be better to make sure that people are taking the proper precautions, it also means that the chances of someone actually getting worse instead of better are greatly increased.
ReplyDelete2. I think that since that cruise boat with so many infected people has been discovered, the US has taken more precautions so that the virus doesn’t become as widely spread as it is in China. However, I also think that people in China have been taking extreme precautions, we just don’t notice them because we don’t live there.
3. I think that people who have the virus should stay home and try not to affect others as one normally would with a virus. However, unlike what Nick said, because this is a virus, I’m not sure that there is a vaccine that can be widely administered to the affected people.
4. At some points, I have gone to school while I still had a minor cold. And while it may be better to wait until you’re completely better sometimes it is hard to tell when that is. However, I haven’t regretted anything because I have never gone when I still had a fever or was contagious.
1. People should definitely be quarantined separately. For example, imagine if there were 50 people quarantined together. 45 out of the 50 people recover, but then the 5 people that don't recover infect them again and prevent them from healing. Separating them would allow people to recover much better. The only problem with this is that it wold be expensive.
ReplyDelete2. The US is going to more extreme measures than China so that the virus does not spread as rapidly as it already has. It would only make the situation worse if coronavirus kept spreading at the rapid rate that it previously has, so the US government is doing their best to prevent that.
3. I agree with Kate in that people should try to stay home to prevent the virus from spreading more than it already has. However, I disagree with her, because viruses are possible to vaccinate against. Measles, polio, and many other vaccinated diseases are all viruses.
4. I, personally, have gone to school while i have had a fever of 103 degrees. Looking back, it was a terrible idea as it delayed my recovery. However, other than that, nothing bad happened. As far as I know, nobody was infected by me.
1.) I agree with Ali that people should be quarantined separately for the same that Ali said. Ali said that if you quarantine together, then you have a chance of the majority of the people being healthy but then a few people actually being sick and then the rest that was healthy end up getting sick. Quarantining separately can easily prevent this because the people who are actually sick would be kept away separately from the people who are quarantined but healthy.
ReplyDelete2.) The USA is going to more extreme measures than China because the USA understands how quickly the coronavirus can spread and they want to prevent it from spreading quicker than they can treat it. The USA also understands how devastating it would be to the US if it was spreading as fast as it is in China’s mainland. They want the highest chance of minimizing the damage that the coronavirus will bring.
3.) I believe that nobody should be able to come in or out of China’s mainland until this pandemic is solved. For countries outside of China that have people who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, then I believe those countries should isolate those people and keep them away from any other humans until they’ve recovered so that it has no way of spreading. If all countries do this, then I believe this problem would be solved sooner than later.
4.) I’ve gone to school while sick but I’ve only gone if it was a minor sickness like a sore throat or small cough. I don’t think it affected me much because it was a very minor sickness and I got through the day like it was any other day.
1. Like Rhys said, I think that people should be quarantined separately. If people in the group have the virus they can easily spread it to others. If the people who have the virus are isolated, the disease will be isolated too. There is no one to spread the virus to. If they pick off the people with the virus and separate them from the others than the disease can't spread.
ReplyDelete2. I think the US is going to extreme measured because first off, they don't want the virus spreading around to weaken our country. Also, many people travel here from all over the world, and this gives higher chances for the US to receive more cases of the virus. And in general, the virus spreads very quickly and this can easily affect our country.
3. I agree with Kate and Ali that all the people infected should stay home to prevent it from spreading. Once a vaccine is created than I feel like it would be okay for people to leave their homes. I just think for now people should stay home until there is a cure.
4. i have gone to school sick before with a fever and a cough. I definitely regret it because it delayed my recovery, and instead it got worse. I didn't really get anything out of the day and my voice was completely gone by the time I got home.
1. I think people should be quarantined separately. I say this because if people are in a larger group, it will be harder to everyone to get better because there won't be enough doctors and resources to treat everyone. It could also be based on the severity of the virus. I also say this because if they're all together, people with less severity can get worse from people with more severity and cause more deaths.
ReplyDelete2. I agree with Juan that the U.S. is taking more extreme measures so it doesn't spread any faster than it already is in China. Also the travel is increasing between countries so they want to prevent people from traveling to the U.S. to spread it that way.
3. I agree with Thomas that people infected with the virus should stay home and prevent it from spreading to more people and causes deaths and cases. If all or most countries do this solution, it will prevent it a lot and cause less deaths.
4. Yes I have and I have regretted it. I went to school and tried to fight through it, but I realized later that it wasn't the smartest decision. I couldn't play sports for the next week-ish and had to stay home. I should have stayed or gone home to get better.
1. I believe that people should be quarantined separately, this would cause the disease not to spread as much. If everyone was together then people who became sick would almost definitely give the other people with them the same sickness. If people were quarantined separately then giving others corona would not be as simple. Some of these people would also get better care, because they wouldn't have the few doctors to many people ratio like what sometimes happens in group quarantines.
ReplyDelete2. The U.S. is going to severe measures to keep this disease contained or out of this country because they don't want a highly contagious disease in the U.S.. The U.S. is trying to not get in a situation like china is right now, where thousands of people have been diagnosed with Coronavirus. They are so worried about travel because the U.S. doesn't want a whole different way for people to catch Coronavirus.
3. I think our next steps should be helping china treat all the people affected, and work on cutting off anyways for coronavirus to spread. I also agree with Thomas that people who have the virus should be very careful not to spread it by staying home or going to the hospital. To fully prevent the virus, people need to find a cure that is easily used and that there is a lot of.
4. I have gone to school when I was sick, sometimes it feels like the right thing to do even though it may be hurting you and the people around you. This sort of mistake usually makes the sickness worse, and you can get others sick.
